Salt water treatment doesn’t mean a maintenance-free, chlorine-free pool. The unit produces disinfectant from salt dissolved in the water, but it still needs correct pH, alkalinity, flow and regular checks. It’s also important to know how salt affects metal parts, covers and surrounding materials.
- Check that all components are suitable for salt water.
- Ask about the lifespan and price of the electrolytic cell.
- Have winterising and temperature-based settings explained to you.
Salinity needs to be measured separately, not estimated by taste – too low a concentration means weak disinfection, too high a concentration stresses the electrolytic cell and surrounding metal parts. Salt is added to the water gradually after draining, backwashing, or rain that dilutes the pool. Without regular salinity checks, the system stops working reliably even when the water looks clean.
Before switching to salt water treatment, also check the age and condition of the existing piping – older metal pipework can be more sensitive to salt water than newer plastic systems. If in doubt, an on-site consultation with a technician is worthwhile, rather than relying solely on catalogue data.
