With sand filtration, people often consider only the tank size and media price. In reality, filtration speed, backwash quality, water treatment and how heavily the pool is used all matter too. Sand is the baseline, glass and activated media can help, but they won’t fix an undersized filter.
- First check the filter size and the pump’s flow rate.
- Ask how the media is backwashed and when it’s replaced.
- For problem water, address the whole system, not just the media.
The price of filter media varies considerably between sand, glass and zeolite, but the difference should be weighed together with lifespan and replacement frequency – glass media usually lasts longer than classic silica sand. When replacing the media, also check the condition of the tank’s bottom nozzles, since damaged nozzles cause uneven flow regardless of how good the new media is.
Before replacing the media, also check the lid seal and the pressure gauge, since even a quality media won’t fix a problem caused by a leak or a malfunctioning valve. Regularly recording pressure before and after backwashing helps catch gradual filter clogging early.
