Ideal pool temperature: comfort, cost and water hygiene

Water temperature is not just a matter of feel. It affects bathing comfort, energy consumption, evaporation, disinfection efficiency and how fast algae multiply. For everyday family swimming, 26 to 28°C is often used as a reasonable range. Sport swimming usually tolerates cooler water, while longer relaxation sessions prefer it a little warmer.

  • For active swimming, water closer to 25-26°C tends to feel more pleasant.
  • For family bathing and relaxation, around 27-28°C makes sense.
  • Above 28°C the water refreshes less and puts more strain on the chemistry.
  • For young children and seniors, a higher temperature can be suitable short-term, but always with sensible supervision.

In heated pools, every extra degree noticeably increases energy consumption, especially without a cover overnight. Before investing in higher heating output, consider whether a good thermal cover would solve the problem more simply, cutting heat loss faster and more cheaply than raising the temperature alone. Public pools are also subject to different recommendations depending on the type of operation and the age of visitors, so they follow separate hygiene rules.
