How many hours a day the filtration should run in summer

Quick answer: In summer the filtration should run longer than outside the season. As a guide, consider the pool volume, pump output, water temperature, bathing load and water quality.

There is no single number that fits every pool. The same filtration time can be enough for a small covered pool and completely insufficient for a large pool in the heat with heavy bathing use.

What determines filtration time

The goal is for a sufficient volume of water to pass through the filter and for no areas of weak circulation to form in the pool.

  • pool volume
  • actual pump flow rate
  • water temperature
  • number of bathers
  • amount of debris from the garden
  • condition of the filter media

A practical rule

In hot weather and with frequent bathing, it’s better to filter in several blocks throughout the day. A short evening run is often not enough.

  • check the pressure on the filter
  • regularly clean the baskets and pre-filter
  • extend filtration time if the water turns cloudy
  • filter more intensively after a storm or a busy day

When to look for a technical problem

If the water isn’t clear even with long filtration, the problem may lie in the flow rate, clogged media, air in the system or badly set valves.
