Hot tub foaming after guests: what’s normal and when to change the water

Quick answer: After heavier use, first check the filter, water values and cosmetic residues. If the foam doesn’t disappear after adjusting the water and filtering, consider replacing part or all of the water.

Foam in a hot tub after guests is common because a small volume of warm water receives a large dose of sweat, cosmetics, detergent from swimwear and organic debris in a short time.

What most often causes foam

Bubbles themselves are not a problem, but stable foam on the surface shows the water is overloaded. The warmer the water and the more people, the faster the problem appears.

  • cosmetics and sunscreen
  • detergent residues in swimwear
  • sweat and organic matter
  • a clogged or poorly rinsed filter
  • low or unbalanced disinfection

What to do right away

Remove and clean the filter, measure pH and disinfection and let the equipment filter. A defoamer can help visually, but it doesn’t address the cause.

  • rinse the filter with a stream of water
  • check pH and disinfection
  • top up disinfection according to instructions
  • replace part of the water after heavy use
  • require a shower without cosmetics before the next bathing session

When to change the water

If the water foams repeatedly, smells unpleasant, feels slimy or cannot be stabilised, changing the water is often cheaper and safer than further chemical attempts.
