Foam in a hot tub: why it happens and how to remove it

How cosmetics, biofilm, filters and old water create foam in a spa or hot tub.

Common causes

Foam usually comes from body oils, cosmetics, detergents in swimwear, low sanitizer, dirty filters or water that is too old for the bathing load.

What to do now

Rinse or replace filters, check pH and sanitizer, remove surface foam and reduce organic load. Anti-foam is only a short-term cosmetic fix.

When to change the water

If foam returns quickly after cleaning and correct dosing, drain the hot tub, clean pipework with a spa flush product and refill with balanced water.
