After the heater, the pump is the most frequently replaced electrical part of a hot tub. As it wears out, it starts to hum, the seal begins to leak or it stops turning altogether. A replacement has to match in three respects: output (so the jets work as before), dimensions and connections (so it can be installed without reworking the plumbing) and electrically (so the control unit can drive it correctly). Everything you need is on the label.
Jet pump or circulation pump?
- The jet pump drives the jets. It typically has an output of around 1.5–3 kW, often two speeds, and a hot tub may have several of them.
- The circulation pump runs for long periods and quietly, pushing water through the filter and heater. It has a low power draw (tens to low hundreds of watts) — typical examples are the Laing E10 or the WTC series from LX.
Smaller hot tubs have no circulation pump, and filtration is handled by the low speed of the jet pump. In that case a two-speed pump is a necessity, not an option.
What’s on the label and what it means
| Data | What it means | What to watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| HP | Output in horsepower (used by American and Asian brands). | Manufacturers quote different kinds of “HP” (rated, brake, “spa HP”). It is better to compare by kW and current. |
| P1 / P2 (kW) | P1 = power drawn from the grid, P2 = output at the shaft. | Compare like with like — the P1 of one pump with the P1 of the other. |
| A (current) | Current draw; for two-speed pumps, listed separately for each speed. | Must match what the relay and fuse in the control unit can handle. |
| V / Hz | Power supply. | In Europe, 230 V / 50 Hz. A pump built for 60 Hz runs at lower speed and output at 50 Hz. |
| 1-speed / 2-speed | One or two speeds. | A two-speed pump is wired differently (more conductors). The replacement must match what the board supports. |
| Frame 48 / 56 | Motor and flange size (on North American pumps). | Determines the dimensions and mounting height — 48 is smaller, 56 larger. |
| Ports 1.5″ / 2″ | Diameter of the suction and discharge, usually with union fittings. | Going from 2″ to 1.5″ is possible with a reducer, but it reduces flow. |
| Discharge orientation | Discharge on the side (side) or at the top centre (center). | A different orientation often means modifying the plumbing. |
Choosing a replacement step by step
- Photograph the motor label and the label on the hydraulic section (the plastic “wet end”), if there is one.
- Measure the distance between the suction and discharge axes and the height of the axis above the floor — this decides whether the new pump will fit in place.
- Check the wiring — how many conductors run from the control unit to the pump and which terminals on the board they connect to.
- Look for the same model, or its successor with the same dimensions and connections. Manufacturers such as LX, Waterway or Espa have hot tub pump ranges with clearly defined replacements.
- Don’t increase the output blindly. A more powerful pump needs more current; if the relay or fuse on the board can’t handle it, the hot tub will keep shutting down or the board will be damaged.
Repair or replace?
Not every fault means a new pump:
- Dripping under the pump — usually the mechanical shaft seal is leaking. It can be replaced on its own, but this needs to be done in time, before water damages the motor bearings.
- Hums but doesn’t turn — often a faulty start capacitor (on some motors) or a rotor that has seized after a long period out of use.
- Noisy bearing — replacing bearings pays off on more expensive motors; on cheap ones, a whole new motor or pump is usually the better deal.
- Cracked hydraulic section after frost — just the “wet end” can be replaced, if it is available for the model in question.
Detailed instructions on replacing the seal, bleeding the pump or diagnosing weak jets can be found in the service guides on PoolSpaShop.
Safety
Always disconnect the pump with the hot tub’s circuit breaker switched off, and verify that the conductors are not live before you start work. After replacing it, bleed the pump — running dry destroys the seal within minutes. Connection to the board and a check of the RCD should be done by an electrician or a service technician.
